Driving Safety - Drugs and Driving

Drugs are dangerous and should never be used in combination with driving. If you are caught driving under the influence of drugs, the punishment will be the same as for alcohol - if you are caught driving under the influence of illegal drugs there may be more serious penalties applied to the charges as well.

Don't believe that drug usage is common! The chart below shows the frequency of drug usage in American teens. The numbers on the charts are percentages of usage among high school sophomores and seniors between the years 1975-2009.

Johnston, L. D., O'Malley, P. M., Bachman, J. G., & Schulenberg, J. E. (December 14, 2009). "Teen marijuana use tilts up, while some drugs decline in use." University of Michigan News Service: Ann Arbor, MI. Retrieved MM/DD/YYYY from http://www.monitoringthefuture.org

Note: the number of teens using drugs is significantly higher than the number of teens using drugs and driving.  More on this is an upcoming news letter.

Driving Skills - The three point turn

THREE POINT TURN

There may be times when you come to a narrow road with no driveways.  To turn around on such a road you must perform a Three Point Turn.  Before you decide to attempt a three point turn, make sure that traffic is clear and you have good visibility of the road in both directions, then follow these steps:

  • Stop as close to the right edge of the curb as possible. Check for traffic in both directions. This turn takes extra time to complete, so wait until you have at least a 20 to 30 second gap.
  • Put on your left turn signal. Check for vehicles in your blind spot by looking over your left shoulder then begin to move your vehicle slowly while turning the steering wheel rapidly to the left. This will bring your vehicle into the opposite lane.
  • When the front wheels of your vehicle are almost to the curb start to turn the wheels rapidly to the right. Stop your vehicle just short of the curb.
  • check traffic to the left then look over your right shoulder for any traffic. Shift your vehicle into reverse. While backing slowly, continue to turn the wheel rapidly to the right. Keep turning the wheels rapidly to the right until you can turn the wheels no further. About 4 feet before stopping, turn the wheel rapidly to the left. Continue looking back until you have some to a complete stop.
  • Put your vehicle into drive and check again for traffic. Now put your left turn signal on and accelerate to the posted speed.

Driving Tip of the Month

Don't follow too close.

Tailgating is unsafe. If the car in front of you stops suddenly, you may not me able to stop in time.
