Driving Terms Glossary
Acronyms you should know
BAC - Blood Alcohol Content - The amount of alcohol in the blood. This can be measured using a blood, breath or urine test. See Chapter 9, Section "Alcohol" for more details.
DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles - A state agency. Its responsibilities include issuing drivers license, license plate and vehicle registration to Nevada residents.
DUI - Driving Under the Influence - Driving while impaired by the use of alcohol or drugs. See Chapter 9, Section "DUI" for more details.
DWI - Driving while intoxicated (see DUI).
GCWR - Gross combined weight rating - This refers to the total weight of the vehicle AND any trailers that it is towing. See Chapter 1, Section "More about Driver Licenses" for further details.
GVWR - Gross vehicle weight rating - This refers to the standard weight of the vehicle being driven. It can also mean the standard weight of a trailer being towed. See Chapter 1, Section "More \ about Driver Licenses" for further details.
HTS - Highway Transportation System
IVP - Insurance Verification Program - A program set up by the DMV to identify uninsured motorists. See Chapter 2, Section "Insurance and Financial Responsibility" for more details.
MPH - Miles per hour - The measurement of how fast a vehicle is going.
MSRP - Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price - the sticker price for a new car. The price that the manufacturer recommends the dealer sell the car. The dealer may actually sell the car for more or less than this price.
NDOT - Nevada Department of Transportation
NHP - Nevada Highway Patrol
NHTSA - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - A federal agency that is part of the United States Department of Transportation.
VIN - Vehicle Identification Number. Each car has a unique number that is stamped on the car when it is made.
